Kali, the goddess of fertility and feminine strength, has long been worshipped by the Hindus. The presence of different Kali temples is seen particularly in the state of West Bengal in India which ironically is also home to a large number of atheists. Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and used to be the capital of India during the British Raj.
The people of West Bengal speak Bengali which is also the official language in the country of Bangladesh. This picture was taken at a popular Kali temple “Dakshineswar” located in about 10 miles north of Kolkata. The location is right next to the river Hooghly (the Ganges) and offers a clear view of the German-built Howrah Bridge.
